How to count days until a date
Pick a date above and you'll see the number of days left, plus weeks and days. It uses your device's clock, so it's always based on your local time zone. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
If you want to do it by hand, count the days left in the current month, add the full months in between (30 or 31 days, with 28 or 29 for February), then add the day number of the target date. It works, but it's easy to slip by one, which is why I just use the calculator.
One thing people often get wrong: whether to count today. Most countdowns, including ours, count the number of sleeps, meaning today isn't included and the target day is the finish line. If you're counting days for a contract or a court deadline, read the exact rules, because some count both ends.
Weeks, months and business days
Dividing the total by seven gives weeks. Months are trickier because they aren't all the same length; on average a month is about 30.44 days. For working days, subtract weekends (roughly two out of every seven days) and any public holidays in between. Our US federal holidays 2027 list helps with that.
Popular things to count down to
Birthdays, wedding days, due dates, vacations, the last day of school, retirement and exam days top the list. A visible countdown is surprisingly motivating. I keep one on my phone's home screen before every trip, and it makes the boring weeks go by faster.
For the big holidays, we've already done the work: see the Christmas countdown, Thanksgiving countdown and Halloween countdown.
