The deadline
Federal income tax returns for tax year 2026 are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. If the deadline ever lands on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day, but in 2027 it's a normal Thursday. People in some disaster areas get automatic extensions, and the IRS announces those separately.
When does filing season start?
The IRS announces the official start date each January. In recent years it has opened in the second half of January. We'll add the 2027 date once the IRS publishes it; until then, any specific date you see is a guess.
What to gather now
W-2s from employers arrive by January 31. 1099 forms cover freelance income, interest and dividends. Keep records of retirement contributions, student loan interest, childcare costs and charitable donations. If you itemize, you'll also need mortgage interest (Form 1098) and property tax statements. A folder, paper or digital, that you drop things into all year saves hours in March.
Refund tips
E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest way to get a refund. Returns that claim certain credits can be held until mid-February by law. Use the IRS's own 'Where's My Refund?' tool to check status; it's the official source.
Extensions
You can request an extension to October 15, 2027, but it extends the time to file, not to pay. Any tax owed is still due April 15.
