Here's every US federal holiday for 2027, with the date and day of the week. These are the days when federal offices, banks and post offices close. Private employers aren't required to give them off, so check your own company's list too.

Observed holidays

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it's observed on the Friday before. When it lands on a Sunday, it's observed on the Monday after. In 2027, Independence Day is a Sunday, so the day off is Monday, July 5. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday, which means Friday, December 24 is the observed holiday, and New Year's Day 2028 is also a Saturday, so it's observed on Friday, December 31, 2027.

How to stretch your time off

The Monday holidays (MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day) are the easiest long weekends. If you take the Friday before or the Tuesday after, you get four days off for one vacation day. Thanksgiving is the big one: take Wednesday and Friday and you've got a five-day break. I always book these early, because flights get pricey fast.

What's open and closed

On federal holidays, USPS doesn't deliver regular mail, banks and the Federal Reserve close, and federal courts shut. The stock market follows its own calendar: it closes on most federal holidays but stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and closes on Good Friday even though that isn't a federal holiday.
