When summer starts
Astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the June solstice, around Monday, June 21, 2027 in the US. It's the longest day of the year. Meteorological summer starts earlier, on June 1. For most kids, though, summer starts the day school lets out, which is late May or June depending on the district.
Plan it early
Summer camps often open registration in January or February, and the good ones fill up fast. Flights for July are usually cheapest when booked a few months out. Memorial Day, May 31, 2027, is the unofficial start of summer; the Fourth of July is a Sunday in 2027, so the federal holiday is Monday, July 5.
Big events
The FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off in Brazil on June 24, 2027, and the Champions League final is June 5 in Madrid. If you're a sports fan, it's a big early summer.
Longest day facts
In Anchorage, the sun is up more than 19 hours on the solstice. In Miami, it's about 13 hours 45 minutes. After the solstice, days start getting shorter again, even though July and August are usually hotter, because land and oceans keep warming.
