The holiday began as a celebration of George Washington's birthday, February 22, and became a federal holiday in 1879. Since 1971 it has been held on the third Monday of February, so it never actually falls on Washington's birthday. Many states use the name Presidents' Day to also honor Abraham Lincoln, born February 12.
