A little history
Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 by the National Retail Federation, after retailers noticed people coming back to work after Thanksgiving and shopping online on their office computers. It's now one of the biggest online shopping days in the world.
How people celebrate
Expect deals on electronics, laptops, clothing and subscriptions. Many 'Cyber Week' sales run from Black Friday through the following weekend. I'd set price alerts on the two or three things you really want and ignore the rest of the noise.
Closures and practical notes
It's a normal working day. Shipping can slow down afterwards because of the volume, so don't leave gifts that need delivery until mid-December.
Planning tips
Make a short list before the sales start and set a budget. Check the price history of anything big, because a 'was' price isn't always real. Compare the final price including shipping and tax, not the percentage on the banner.
Stacked discounts multiply rather than add up, so 30% off plus another 20% off is 44% off. Returns windows are often extended for holiday purchases, but read the policy before you buy.
How the countdown works
We count full calendar days from today's date to the holiday, using the clock on your own phone or computer, so it matches your local time zone. On the day itself the counter switches to the next year's date. Want to count to a birthday or deadline instead? Our days until any date page does that in one tap.
